Montana's most topographically prominent peak, a rugged, isolated highpoint towering over I-90 near Big Timber -- long a place of spiritual significance to the Apsaalooke (Crow) people.
From Big Timber, drive north on Highway 191 for about 9 miles, turn left (west) on Wormser Road/Loop Road, continue about 3.4 miles, turn right onto Big Timber Canyon Road, and follow it roughly 13 miles (the last stretch is rough) to Half Moon Campground, the trailhead. The first three miles follow the Big Timber Creek drainage on a moderate grade, well-populated with yellow-bellied marmots. Above the trees, the route gains the long East Ridge, a sustained scramble that never exceeds Class 3 but offers a great deal of it before reaching the summit.
