Permit Required
Culebra Peak sits entirely on the private Cielo Vista Ranch, and there is no legal alternate route to the summit. Climbing requires booking and paying for a reservation in advance through the ranch's own website; the fee has historically run around $150 per person (higher for some dates/seasons), with a limited climbing season (roughly January through July in recent years) and specific check-in and check-out times enforced at the gate. This property has changed ownership more than once, most recently in a large ranch sale, and access terms have shifted accordingly over the years — confirm current booking availability, pricing, and season directly with the ranch before planning a trip.
Route Description
The only entirely privately owned 14er in Colorado — a straightforward Class 2 climb whose real challenge is securing paid access through the ranch that owns it.
Approach
All access to Culebra Peak is through the Cielo Vista Ranch near San Luis. Climbers reserve and pay for a day online through the ranch's own booking system before arriving; there is no legal public trailhead or approach outside the ranch, and climbing elsewhere on the property is trespassing.
From the ranch's 4WD trailhead, hike up open, largely trail-less grassy slopes to gain the northwest ridge.
Follow the ridge, marked with occasional large cairns, to the broad summit at 14,053 feet.
Descent
Reverse the ridge and slopes back to the ranch trailhead, respecting the ranch's posted checkout time.
