The second-highest and, by most accounts, more rugged and striking of the Boulder Mountains' two giants -- often mistaken from a distance for the range high point, Ryan Peak.
Access is the same North Fork Trailhead used for Ryan Peak (Forest Road 146, 5.5 miles from the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters on Highway 75). From the trailhead, the South Ridge climbs on solid rock the whole way -- an unusually enjoyable, fast-moving Class 3 scramble for a range known for loose, rotten rock.
