The highest 11,000-foot peak in Montana and one of the shortest 12,000-foot-class ascents in the Beartooths, reachable in half a day.
From the Rock Creek Trailhead (Main Fork), at the Montana/Wyoming border, the approach hike passes Shelf Lake and Moon Lake, both good fishing and scenic stops, before reaching the base of Metcalf's south ridge. The south ridge itself is a straightforward talus hike to the summit, with loose rock underfoot being the main annoyance rather than any real technical difficulty.
