The standard scrambling route up Mount Stuart's southeast flank, and one of the most popular objectives in the Stuart Range, though it remains a serious full day with significant loose rock.
Drive up the North Fork Teanaway Road (Forest Road 9737) to its end at the Esmeralda Trailhead, also known as the Lake Ingalls Trailhead. Dogs are prohibited beyond the first junction with the Ingalls Way Trail. From the trailhead, follow the Esmeralda Basin Trail a short distance to the junction with the Ingalls Way Trail, then continue to the junction with the Longs Pass Trail and climb to Longs Pass at roughly 6,200-6,300 feet. Descend switchbacks on the far side of the pass to a basin around 4,800 feet near Ingalls Creek, where a base camp is commonly made. Cross Ingalls Creek and follow the Ingalls Creek Trail east roughly a quarter to half mile to a large meadow at the base of the Cascadian Couloir, from which the couloir's entrance is not obvious until closer approach. From the meadow, head up off-trail through a boulder field to the base of the couloir. The couloir itself is a sustained, direct ascent on a braid of climbers' paths and cairns through loose rock and (early season) snow, gaining roughly the last 4,000-4,500 feet to the base of the summit ridge, which is followed a short distance to the true summit.
Descend the ascent route. The couloir is notorious for multiple braided boot-paths rather than one clean line; staying on the main route and moving carefully reduces the rockfall risk to parties below, which is the primary descent hazard.
