The second of the Pioneer Mountains' "Big Three," an enjoyable cross-country approach that ends in a genuine scramble up the peak's east side.
Access is the same Hyndman Creek Road used for Hyndman Peak. From the basin, the trail disappears and the route becomes cross-country, crossing several large plateau-like benches with Cobb Peak towering on the left. Cross the creek draining Big Basin and climb forested hills toward a small lake (one of the "Cobb Lakes") at about 10,240 feet. From there, Old Hyndman comes into view up the drainage; ascend toward the saddle between Old Hyndman and Point 11,442, watching for mountain goats in the talus. From the saddle, the East Face presents the technical crux of the last 300 feet: climbers can either follow a black rock dike or make a more direct assault on the face itself.
