One of Colorado's more serious standard 14er routes, sharing the Maroon Bells' notoriously loose rock and seasonal access restrictions.
Access is via Maroon Lake, sharing the trailhead used for Maroon Peak. During the main season (roughly mid-June through early October), daytime access is generally restricted to the paid RFTA shuttle from Aspen Highlands unless arriving before the restriction window starts each morning, and a parking/reservation system applies. Confirm current shuttle hours and reservation requirements before the trip. From Maroon Lake, follow the trail toward Crater Lake, then branch toward Pyramid's northeast side rather than continuing to the Maroon Bells. The Northeast Ridge climbs through a series of loose, exposed Class 4 sections — gullies and ribs of notoriously rotten rock typical of the Elk Range — to the summit at 14,018 feet.
Reverse the ridge with particular care — loose rock makes downclimbing more hazardous than the ascent, and this is one of the more serious descents among Colorado's standard 14er routes.
