The highest point in the Boulder Mountains, hidden from view along Highway 75 but the range's marquee summit once reached.
From Idaho State Highway 75 north of Ketchum, turn at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters onto Forest Road 146 and follow it 5.5 miles to the North Fork Trailhead and a small camping area. The North Fork Trail climbs a hill then descends alongside the North Fork of the Big Wood River; about 1.5 miles in, watch for the West Pass Trail branching off in a small sagebrush clearing marked by rock cairns (the junction is easy to miss). Follow the West Pass Trail up through trees and switchbacks, past several waterfalls, to a small sloping basin at about 9,400 feet, then continue to West Pass itself. Leave the trail at the pass and head cross-country to the Ryan-Kent saddle, then follow Ryan's south ridge to the summit.
