One of the most remote and least-visited fourteeners in Colorado, a gentle Class 1 walk-up made long mainly by the distance of the approach.
Access is from a trailhead in the La Garita Wilderness southwest of Gunnison/Creede, reached via a long dirt road approach through wide, open high country. The trail follows a gradual, well-defined path through rolling alpine terrain toward San Luis Peak's northeast ridge. The final climb up the ridge to the summit at 14,014 feet is a straightforward, non-technical walk.
Reverse the route back to the trailhead — there is no technical difficulty on the descent, though the overall distance makes for a long day.
