Tabeguache's standard route, reached by first summiting neighboring Mount Shavano and crossing the connecting ridge between the two.
The route shares Mount Shavano's approach from the Blank Cabin (Blanks Gulch) Trailhead near Salida, climbing through forest to the saddle between Shavano and Tabeguache before continuing up Shavano's south ridge to its summit at 14,229 feet. From Shavano's summit, descend northwest along the connecting ridge toward Tabeguache, dropping roughly 700–800 feet to the low point of the saddle. Climb the remaining distance to Tabeguache's summit at 14,155 feet, on a mix of trail and talus.
Return over the connecting ridge and back over Shavano's summit, which adds a real re-climb (roughly 1,000 feet) on the way out — factor this into time and energy planning for the day.
