The standard scrambling route up one of the most striking peaks in the Beartooths, reached via Sundance Pass and finishing along Whitetail's northeast ridge.
From the West Fork Rock Creek Trailhead, follow the trail past Quinnebaugh Meadow and a series of culvert-bridge creek crossings toward Sundance Pass, with Whitetail Peak visible ahead for much of the approach. Most parties camp along the way, commonly near Shadow Lake at the foot of the peak. From the pass area, the route leaves the trail and climbs the northeast ridge on talus and blocky rock, staying on or near the ridge crest for the best rock and to avoid loose terrain lower on the flanks. An exposed section partway up the ridge is the route's crux before easier scrambling leads to the summit.
