The 2014-built alternate Mailbox trail is longer (4.7 miles) but more gradual than the old trail, with better switchbacks and a more sustainable grade. Still challenging but significantly more accessible.
The new trail shares the trailhead with the old route but branches left almost immediately, climbing through forest on a well-graded switchbacking trail before joining the old route near the summit. The upper section is shared with the old trail.
