The brutally steep original Mailbox Peak trail — 2.7 miles and 3,900 feet of gain. One of the most demanding day hikes in the Seattle area and a beloved local fitness test.
From the trailhead on Middle Fork Road, the Old Mailbox Trail wastes no time gaining elevation, climbing relentlessly through second-growth forest on a rough, rocky tread. The final push breaks above treeline to a rocky summit with a mailbox stuffed with registers, toys, and oddities left by previous climbers.
Drive I-90 east from Seattle to exit 34 (Edgewick Road), then follow Middle Fork Road approximately 2.5 miles to the trailhead. Road is paved but narrow. Parking fills early on weekends.
