Also known as: Mount Hood Timberline Trail
A 40-mile loop circumnavigating Mount Hood through diverse terrain including old-growth forest, alpine meadows, volcanic moonscapes, and dramatic glacier-fed river crossings. One of Oregon's classic backpacking routes with views of the mountain from every angle.
The Timberline Trail was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and largely follows the route originally used by Native American peoples traveling around the mountain. The Sandy River crossing has washed out several times and can be dangerous or impassable in high water years.
