The easiest and most popular route on Mount Shuksan, the Sulphide Glacier approach is a classic alpine climb involving a long approach, glacier travel, and a summit pyramid scramble. The summit views of Baker, the North Cascades, and the Skagit Valley are exceptional.
From Shannon Creek Trailhead (1,800 ft), ascend through forest on the Lake Ann trail before branching onto the Shuksan Arm. Gain the upper Sulphide Glacier and travel north-northeast across the glacier, navigate the summit pyramid — a moderately exposed Class 3-4 rock scramble — to the summit.
Drive to Shannon Creek Trailhead off Highway 542 east of Bellingham. The trailhead is on the south side of the mountain.
Descend the ascent route. The summit pyramid requires care on descent. The long approach makes for a long day or a recommended overnight at the glacier.
