History
First climbed in 1853 by Thomas J. Dryer. The 1980 eruption on May 18 was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in US history, killing 57 people and reducing the summit from 9,677 to 8,363 feet. Climbing was restricted until 1987 and now requires a summit permit.
