The standard and most popular route on South Sister follows a well-marked trail from the Devil's Lake Trailhead through lush meadows and stunning volcanic terrain to the summit. The upper mountain is a straightforward scree and snow walk requiring no technical climbing.
From Devil's Lake Trailhead (5,450 ft), follow the South Sister Climbing Trail through lodgepole pine forest, past Moraine Lake, and up volcanic scree and pumice slopes to the Summit Lake crater. The true summit sits on the crater rim. Early season the upper mountain holds snow and an ice axe is recommended.
Drive to Devil's Lake Trailhead off Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway (Highway 46) southwest of Bend, Oregon. Day use parking is often full by 6am in summer — arrive early or park at overflow areas.
Descend the ascent route. Scree skiing/running on the loose pumice is fast and fun on descent. Route is well-marked.
